How often do we wonder whether those broken souls who reside in the hidden creases of buildings or lie prostrate in an underground pedestrian tunnel are simply devoid of love?

Recently on my way to prayer, I was reminded that I am here by chance, by luck if you will — and will depart under similar, somewhat bizarre, circumstances. This is the same for all of us, I am sure. A small story: On my route, a dual traffic light is situated at a major intersection. The first allows the buses to proceed and the second, when illuminated green, the rest of the general traffic. This rather inattentive motorcyclist duly waited for the second light to change. He then, inexplicably, strayed into the bus lane.

I recently watched a video of the hot dog eating competition at Nathan’s on Coney Island, New York. (2) Disgusting would be an understatement. Now I am not conservative when it comes to extreme events. I am as titillated as the next person when I watch someone jump out of an airplane without a parachute fall into an enormous net, and survive. (3) But, the food thing, I don’t get.
