“Do I know the world only through my senses — is nothing innate?” (1) This question constantly buzzes around in my head. “Do I have significance: will the world I create through my actions have consequences? Will I die without my mission being fulfilled?” Apprehension seems to be everywhere in life. (2)

Don’t you love the thought of an upcoming trip, a new purchase, or next month’s concert? Anticipation is part of the energy that makes life enviable, viable, and exciting. Yes, indeed, we must deeply thrust ourselves into the moment, into the present. But concomitant with that feeling is the thought of what could or what will be.
Continue reading AnticipationA new beginning: the new year dawns
We are said to be flowing streams of consciousness, or are we? What reality do I really occupy other than the immediate moment, which itself is brief and fleeting? How do I find that elusive peace that all of us so desire? As the new year begins to set its course, we are all allowed to start with a clean slate — to have a new beginning. Our “whiteboard” need not be impregnated with anything that we don’t put there ourselves: pain, jealousy, envy or regret, to name but a few.
Continue reading A new beginning: the new year dawnsThe search for maturity
When I was growing up in my little, isolated, village in Canada, a car was everything. If you had a car, you had a girlfriend – or so the myth went among “the men.” Now a car was expensive. I had the money because of my part-time job, but then there was my father. A car represented a sense of liberty that he was unwilling to grant — so, no car!

The bugs, bees, and birds never give us pause, do they? These creatures are always there — flying overhead, scurrying on the ground, and framing our summer nights with their melodic sound. Even in winter, no matter how cold or inclement, these tiny beings won’t desert us. They are perennial much like the sun, the moon, and the stars to paraphrase Desiderata. (1)

I am always reminded that often the real lessons of life lie in chance encounters or in simple situations. These occurrences present golden nuggets of wisdom that are dangled before our eyes. The thoughts of the individuals “just getting through life” are often as profound, however.

I have a friend who is always positive, always confident. It is one of his many gifts. At times, however, I find this seemingly blatant disregard for the facts to be overwhelming and somewhat vexing.
Continue reading FriendsNever give up on your dreams – never!
Where do dreams come from? They come from deep, deep inside of you and only you. They remain hidden down three flights of stairs, carried along a darkened corridor, and dropped down a plunging lift to your private world of imagination. I want to step into that world — to float like a bird and soar to the heavens; to dive to the deepest trench in the seas and to communicate with all forms of life.

People say that we all need a vacation. The time away is restful and calming. Many people when asked to proffer their goal in life, often utter, I want to travel. When queried they further respond — everywhere! This is a wonderful target, espoused by eager and excited minds.
Continue reading Let’s take a tripDon’t take yourself too seriously!
Don’t take yourself too seriously – this is good advice. You just need to have a good laugh. Recently on my way to church, — a relatively short distance – I saw three “fender benders,” three relatively minor traffic accidents: the value of the vehicles seeming to increase the ardor and animation of the participants – the more expensive, the angrier!
