Your relationship with joy

What are the beginnings of joy? Joy emanates from the center of me. That being said, how do I achieve joy on a daily basis in a chaotic world? We are compelled to reevaluate the way we perceive reality. Joy itself is elusive and not easily acquired. The very beginning of this concept must be predicated on want: I truly want to be happy, contented, etc. Most of us, however, have grown up in a capitalistic system that is based on consumption. We are virtually pre-programmed to join the ranks of economic slaves and spend most of our lives in useless tasks that make the owners of capital richer and richer, and the working minions forced into a minor economic role, yet continuously trying to save money.

Emotions

From the earliest ages, we are inundated with waves of emotion, doubt, fear, and anxiety. It is as if we are caught in a harrowing maelstrom. It soon becomes self-evident that how we manage this tempest, and the way we protect ourselves from the cold of an emotional winter, dictate the life that we will lead. There are those individuals who experience life not as a distant winter with its apprehension and existential angst (1) but as a blistering summer. These individuals are overwhelmed with a pace and intensity that pulls them in countless directions at once. This is your great friend, with such intelligence and passion that he should be successful and world famous, but in the end succumbs to alcohol, drugs, or bad relationships — and dies at an early age. Such a tragedy!

Age is mostly in the mind

This morning, I realized that I felt “pretty good.” I believe that many of us had this same feeling. I have yet one more birthday approaching. This reminds me that time is relentless — it marches on: the body continues to age. But where is the pain and suffering that I anticipated at my age when I was 18 years old? It has not yet appeared. It would be false to claim that the 69-year-old body mirrors that of a 23-year-old one: it doesn’t. However, the frustrations and anxieties associated with physical age are no longer with me.
